參加「北美華人教育研究及策劃協會」會議的感想分享

今年四月初,北美華人教育研究及策劃協會(Chinese American Education Research and Development Association,簡稱CAERDA)在路易西安那州的紐奧良市舉辦第十屆年會,我很榮幸能在此會中發表論文,探討美國大學部新生入學時英文作文測驗的實施方式和可信度。

這項國際學術會議的與會者全是華人教育學者,來自北美、台灣、香港和中國大陸。許多人已是知名的教育研究者,他們或在大學任教,或在各地教育部任職。他們不但針對我的研究提供寶貴的意見,更是充滿了提攜後進的熱情。協會主席黃教授和會議主辦人蘇德里博士並邀請大家共赴晚宴,以促進彼此了解。

        參與這次CAERDA的會議令我受益良多,我不但汲取了學術新知,了解各地教育改革動態,更認識了許多在教育界的華人前輩和同學們。在此,我要特別感謝駐洛杉磯辦事處文化組,其「留學生參加國際學術會議發表論文獎助」資助我部份旅費,使我能成行,參與CAERDA的學術盛會。我建議留美的同學們多多在學術會議中發表論文,並向文化組申請此項獎助金,以增進個人經驗和學業的發展。(筆者現為夏威夷大學台灣同學會會長)

Title: Evaluating the Reliability of a Direct English Writing Assessment

for College Freshmen

Abstract 

By presenting the rationale, method, and results of a quantitative evaluation of Manoa Writing Placement Exam (MWPE) of the University of Hawaii-Manoa (UHM), I hope to contribute to the field of education research by demonstrating how to systematically evaluate the reliability of a direct writing assessment.  All incoming UHM freshmen have to write two essays in 5 hours: an analytic response to an essay, and personal experience essay.  The reliability of MWPE is crucial to the appropriate placement of freshmen into different levels of English writing courses.  However, in 1998, MWPE reliability was jeopardized by the problems of non-equivalent pairing of test prompts, and the misuse of a special K-R20 formula to calculate inter-rater reliability.  To address these problems, this study examines the reliability of the 1999 spring and August MWPE with four research questions: A. Is the result of the 1999 MWPE as a whole consistent with those in previous years? B. Do K-R20 and Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), a more appropriate formula to calculate the inter-rater reliability for MWPE than K-R20, produce similar results? C. Is the rating reliable? D. Do scores in the 1999 MWPE vary significantly among different pairs of prompts?

1331 freshmen’s scores in MWPE 1999 are summarized in descriptive statistics and compared with those of the previous years.  Then, inter-rater reliability is analyzed with both the special K-R20 formula and ICC, and the results were compared. ANOVA is employed to investigate the equivalence of prompt pairing.  The results showed that 1999 MWPE as a whole was quite consistent with those in previous years in terms of means and standard deviation.  Also, the rating was reliable, but non-equivalence of prompt pairs continues to slightly jeopardize the reliability of the 1999 MWPE.  Therefore, suggestions include an evaluation of the problematic prompts to make suitable revision and the use of ICC to estimate the inter-rater reliability of MWPE in the future.
