參與社區活動與服務（Community service activities)並從中學習做優良公民，是美國教育目標之一，所以許多學校都提供社區服務的機會，讓學生到醫院、老人院、公立圖書館、教會等社區機構做義工。依據1999年一項調查研究，六至十二年級學生，52%參與社區服務。
